FREE Practical Advice and Tips on how to get money back, replacements, credits, compensation and more for poor service and shoddy goods across the UK

Prevention

Think before you buy or order, you may well save yourself trouble and money later!!

When seeking a refund for poor quality goods or service, it maybe that you could have avoided the problem by better buying or sourcing of goods or services.

Big discounts and cheap deals are attractive and we all are keen to buy at the lowest price, but we often sacrifice quality by opting for a lower price - as such we only have ourselves to blame if we expect top quality AND low prices, the two do not always go together. There is a BIG DIFFERENCE between getting good value, and buying poor quality.

If you pay a fair price for typical quality then you have EVERY RIGHT to complain and the weight of the consumer law is likely to be more in your favour. LET THE BUYER BEWARE is a useful maximum however, and a little foresight is not a bad thing.

Consider these key points:
  • Do not buy on impulse,  think it out first, and take time to consider, be sure what you buy or order is what you both need and can afford, and is good quality from a reputable source. Keep your eye out for bargains and good deals but keep in mind the maxims "buy in haste, repent at leisure" and "let the buyer beware!".

  • Review different suppliers and price options - avoid being "sold" to by a pressure salesperson - always be the buyer, stay in charge - if you buy something you do not need or cannot afford, you may find changing your mind and getting a refund later is not possible.

  • Avoid buying privately - you have limited legal recourse and protection if things go wrong and carry a high risk, use reputable traders. Buying from friends and relatives or via their referrals lessens the risk but again offers no guarantee on quality.

  • Ask friends and relatives for advice on suppliers and makes - someone who is known to you, who is satisfied is a great reference, but watch for salespeople who say things like " everyone likes these, we cannot get enough, only a few left etc" believe INDEPENDENT and UNBIASED recommendations, above BIASED claims which may be lies or variations on the truth. Verbal claims may be hard to prove one way or another.

  • Get references to satisfied customers or clients for trade services and follow them up, try several, smaller "shady" services are known to "plant" friends and relatives to give good references.

  • Negotiate with the supplier for major purchases or investments - get extras, free insurance and the like, use phrases like "IF I place the order what extra can you do OR GIVE" (lower price, extras, time to pay, cash on completion, etc)

  • Do not be pushed into "must sign today" routine a favourite of home improvement companies who can earn 10-15% commission on overpriced deals, reputable smaller firms can often beat big national firms on both price and quality.

  • Check the legal cooling off period during which you can change your mind - avoid long term deals which are costly which have short or limited cooling off period, OR NON AT ALL!!!.

  • Pay deposits and/or by cheque or credit/debit card - avoid paying cash especially to small traders and private people.

  • If needed use bankers drafts or building society cheques to pay for goods or services, this makes it easier to prove payment was made to back up receipts or lack of receipts. Smaller traders often prefer cash to avoid VAT or TAX and are thus acting illegally, be wary.

  • Make a final check BEFORE TAKING goods away or excepting delivery - open boxes - leaving a store with box containing X when your bought Y can create problems - 10 extra minutes can save you frustration and money. Sign delivery notes NOT INSPECTED to cover you which shows doubt that the goods were correct when delivered.
