FREE Practical Advice and Tips on how to get money back, replacements, credits, compensation and more for poor service and shoddy goods across the UK

Entertainment

Entertainment covers a variety of leisure situations as well as corporate facilities, essentially providing services and not the direct sales of goods. Naturally food and drink, accommodation and music or other "entertainment" often completes a package.

Our other sections may well have overlapping information, so see also

Events may cover the booking of events, days, week or even months ahead which create problems prior to the event, leading to delays or cancellations and the events themselves. It may be a night out, a special meal, a business meeting, or a few weeks away, the list is endless.

The problem may affect you, a family group, a firms outing or a business conference or a family holiday in the UK or in Europe again the options, circumstances and level of importance are vast.

Basically when things go wrong due to the service suppliers error, you would expect to either

  • Cancel a booking without penalty, and get any deposit back

  • Not have to pay at all

  • Get your money back

  • Get a discount or part refund

  • Get a credit or voucher against future purchases

  • Get Compensation e.g. to pay for damage to a dress, personal injury

Typical conditions creating reasons for a claim

  • Double booking by service provider

  • Cancellation at last minute by service provider

  • Fire or other disaster affecting holding of the event

  • Poor facilities, too crowded, missing services etc.

  • Poor services - slow, rude staff, spillage etc.

  • Bad food

  • Cleanliness

  • Damage to personal possessions (e.g. food/drink spilled by staff or other customers)

  • Theft of personal possessions

  • Injury or Assault by staff or other customers

  • Illness causes by bad food/drink

How to claim - for more serious claims jump to Management or Head office to start, even use legal action from the onset.

  • See the reception area or the person who served you

  • See a supervisor and note their name

  • Explain the problem

  • Ask what they plan to do, this often gets an acceptable solution, a quick fix - often discussions are in public view so the facility will not want a public display from you - a useful weapon if you have a valid case.

  • If this is not acceptable say so and demand better

  • Ask to see the ultimate local Manager, wait if need, or demand they appear (they are often "unavailable, on holiday or busy")

  • Ask who is RESPONSIBLE in their absence if off site. Laws may be broken if no one is - tell them so.

  • Ask questions rather than make statements

    • My suit is damaged - what are you going to do about it?

    • This food is awful - do you expect to be paid for this?

  • Get other people who are with you to support your claim

  • Try and resolve NOW as it happens

  • Making claims AFTER the event make it harder to prove and you loose the advantage of a PUBLIC DISPLAY of annoyance and anger.

No quick solution,  where to next?

  • Collect information, dates, times peoples names, reason for claim

  • Get Head Office or Owner details

  • Put claim in writing, keep it simple and to the point, send recovered delivery ideally to a specific named person. Check the Royal Mail's web site to confirm delivery of Record Items

  • Send copies of relevant bill or other useful documents

  • Contact credit card company (if applicable) they may be able to arrange a refund, telephone initially to discuss possible options.

  • Follow up in a few days to ensure your letter has been received and is being handled or answered/dealt with. If needed send a copy and make sure you get a named person to chase again in a few days

  • Check any health or safety laws for infringement

  • Check the organization for Membership of any trade or professional organization and contact them.

  • Consider legal action.
